Council welcomes Government's commitment to devolution deal

Cornwall Council has welcomed the government’s announcement that it intends to progress the Level 2 Cornwall Devolution Deal accepted by Cabinet on 28 November 2023.

The majority of the deal is already being implemented, including funding projects to support the Cornish distinctiveness, but the devolution of the adult education budget to the Council still requires parliamentary approval.

In a statement released today (Thursday, September 19), the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, said the numerous agreements were an “important step” for places to see early benefits from devolution, adding that the government will “continue working to explore the next steps towards deeper and wider devolution.”

The announcement comes less than a month after Cornwall Council leaders joined Cornwall’s MPs in sending a joint letter to the Deputy Prime Minister reiterating their desire for a ‘broader and deeper’ devolution settlement that goes beyond what has already been secured, without the need for Cornwall to become part of a combined authority.

“We want you to know that Cornwall is ready, willing and able to participate in the Government’s ‘new wave of devolution’ in its own right, as opposed to any suggestion of a combined authority that stretches across the Tamar,” they said.
