Church Hall renovation project to transform community space on the Isles of Scilly

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Ecclesiastical Parish of the Isles of Scilly is proud to announce the launch of a transformative renovation project for the Church Hall on St Marys, thanks to part-funding of £26,340 allocated from Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme (CLUP), part of the Good Growth Programme, which is delivering the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly.

Keith Grossett, Head of Economy and Procurement for Council of Isles of Scilly, said: “The funding panel were pleased to be able to support the Church Hall renovation bid, as this project will remove barriers to participation for a wide range of users."

The Church Hall, a vital standalone community hub on the Isles of Scilly, currently hosts a variety of local activities including a community café, lunches, a bowling club, and a girl guide unit. However, the building’s lack of step-free access has long posed a barrier to many residents, including wheelchair users, those with mobility aids, and parents with pushchairs.

With the awarded funding, the PCC will undertake significant upgrades to ensure the hall is accessible and welcoming to all. Planned improvements include:

  • Widening the building’s access points
  • Installing a permanent ramp for step-free entry
  • Replacing the entrance door for improved accessibility
  • Fitting a new kitchen to better serve community groups
  • Upgrading windows and doors to enhance energy efficiency

These renovations will not only make the hall more inclusive but also increase its usage through additional bookings and community events. The improved facilities will also position the hall as an affordable venue for weddings and special occasions.

The Rev’d Elizabeth Burke, Chaplain and incumbent for the Isles of Scilly, said:  “This project is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about creating a space where everyone in our community feels welcome and included.”
