Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting on-call firefighters

On-call firefighters come from all walks of life

Members of the public are being invited to have a go at being a firefighter.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is hosting three taster events ahead of its upcoming recruitment campaign for on-call firefighters, which make up 75% of the service.

The Have a Go events will take place at:

•    Newquay Fire Station, November 12, 2025, 5pm to 8.30pm

•    Bodmin Fire Station, November 15, 2025, 9am to 1pm

•    Penzance Fire Station, November 17, 2025, 5pm to 8.30pm

The sessions are designed to give people a taste of what it’s like to be an on-call firefighter.

Participants will have the chance to try out equipment, learn about the physical and practical aspects of the job, and speak directly with serving firefighters about their experiences.

Whether you're curious about the role, considering a new challenge, or simply want to learn more about how firefighters serve the community, anyone aged 18 and over can go along to find out more.

Kathryn Billing, Chief Fire Officer at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, said: “These taster sessions give people the chance to find out what being a firefighter is really about.

“If you think you’ve got what it takes to join our service, we’d love to see you there.“

Antony Bartlett, Diversity and Inclusion Lead and Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, said: “On-call firefighters come from all walks of life and we want to hear from people with different life experiences.

“These events are great opportunity to find out more about on-call firefighters and to ask questions about the role.”

Applications for on-call firefighters open on November 24.
