Duty to report to the Valuation Office, part of HMRC

In the future ratepayers will have an annual duty to inform The Valuation Office that the information they hold is correct.

Ratepayers will be required to register on the Government Gateway and notify The Valuation Office of any changes (within 60 days of the change).

Businesses that fail to comply with the duty could be fined.

The new duty requires businesses to tell The Valuation Office about changes such as:

  • Changes to the use of the property
  • Changes to the size of the property
  • Changes to the condition of the property
  • Changes to the value of the property

This will help ensure that businesses pay the correct amount in Business Rates. It will also give The Valuation Office the information it needs to make accurate valuations.

We’ll provide more information about how this will work and the timescales for implementation. We’ll do this when all of this becomes available.

Be the first to know about changes to your property's valuation for business rates.
