Information about St Ives Library and Information Service

The management of St Ives Library and Information Service has transferred to St Ives Town Council as part of Cornwall Council’s Devolution Programme.  The devolution programme is helping councils and communities take over local ownership, management and control of services. Cornwall Council continues to support the Town Council to deliver the local service. St Ives Library and Information Service customers will still be members of the Cornwall Library and Information Service and will be able to borrow from the Cornwall-wide stock of books, CD’s and DVD’s, as well as having access to online newspapers, e-magazines, eBooks and computers.

  • The nearest car park is the Station car park and St Ives bus station at the Malakoff. No parking nearby.
  • Wheelchair accessible with a lift to the first floor
  • Accessible toilets on each floor

Cash, cheque and card payments are taken during normal opening hours.

  • National Concessionary bus pass applications are quick and easy to apply for online.  If you do not have access to the internet they can be processed Monday to Friday during normal opening hours.   
  • Council payments taken during normal opening hours.
  • Recycling bags and boxes - this One Stop Shop doesn’t hold stocks of recycling equipment / recycling containment but we can order on your behalf or you can order direct using the using our request recycling equipment / recycling containment online form.
  • Seagull proof bags available for £3.50 each. The reusable bags will hold three black sacks of rubbish.
  • Drop-in Classes in German - Starting Wednesday 5 December 2018 2.00pm-3.00pm every week.  Do you want to travel to Germany, Austria or Switzerland? Communicate in German to your customers and visitors? Learn and practise language skills in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.  Cost is £5 per person per session.
  • Family and local history group - Help and guidance available to support your search for your ancestors with free Internet access to Find my Past.  Family History is every Friday 10.30am–12noon. Volunteers available to help.
  • Friends' groups - FOSIL (Friends of St Ives Library) organises regular library events and activities, annual subscription £5.00
  • St Ives Poetry Workshop third Friday of each month 1.30pm-3.30pm.
  • St Ives Poetry Circle - Poetry for Pleasure meets every first Friday of each month 1.30pm-3.30pm.  All welcome to attend. Bring a favourite poem to read or just come and listen.
  • Readers' groups:
    • Dead Choughed meets every third Monday of the month 11.15am-12.15pm, meets in Greta Williams Community Room.
    • U3A readers' circle We meet every fourth Monday 11.15am-12.15pm. We are a lively group currently numbering 12 but happy to welcome more members. We have diverse tastes and each member gets a chance to suggest our next read , please contact the library for further details and dates.
    • Coffee and Crime Reading Group meet on the 2nd Monday each month at 11.15 great for crime and thriller readers.

  • Yoga classes - Iyengar yoga 'drop-in' classes every Monday mornings 9:15am-10.45am and every Wednesday 9:15am-10.45am.

  • Arts Award Supporter
    If you’re aged 7-25 and you’re already doing an Arts Award at school or an Arts Award centre, then we can help.  We offer:

    • Support with your arts research (forget Google and try books! We have a great collection of books about art, theatre and dance)
    • A chance to exhibit your work in our exhibition space
    • Volunteering opportunities for 14+ with Summer Reading Challenge
  • Bookstart Rhymetime - Free, for babies and toddlers every Wednesday from 10.45am-11.15am. Come and sing along with your children/grandchildren. All welcome. Find out what Bookstart and the library can offer you and your baby. 
  • Lego Club – St Ives Library Lego Club is on the second Monday of the month at 3.45pm – 4.45pm. It is free and all primary school aged children are welcome.
  • Stock at St Ives reflects the modern schools of art featured at the nearby Tate of the West. It includes works on photography, fashion and design, and extensive information on the St Ives artists. 
  • Penzance Library has a comprehensive collection of Art books and exhibition catalogues.  The collection has an equal emphasis on Cornish and World Art and includes many rare and limited edition items.  The Library subscribes to a number of Art and Craft magazines.
