Penzance Library and Information Service

Cornwall’s Libraries are now able to offer book services again by welcoming you at the door but not any further just yet. Order your books online, then go to your nominated library to collect them from the lobby or entrance. You can also return items, with no fines until 30 September. Regular library activities such as story-time sessions will have to wait until we can fully reopen. They can’t go ahead until it is safe. Please keep an eye on our social posts and publicity. 

Please note that not all services and facilities are available so please check with your local library before making a special journey.

If you’ve been longing for a real book in your lap, come back to us from Monday 6 July, opening days and times will vary. Please see opening times below.

Those who use the Information Service for payments and council enquiries should continue to use:

  • online options
  • telephone options

These have been in place over the last three months. The Information Service remains closed. The click and collect service is only for library books.

Payments for Council services such as Council Tax or Business Rates are taken during opening hours at this location, please have your bill to hand.

For your convenience there are a range of PayPoint and Post Office sites that accept both cash and card payments, with most Post Offices still accepting cheques at no extra cost.  Your account will be updated overnight and many PayPoint stores have longer opening hours, often including weekends, offering greater flexibility and choice.   • We no longer have specialist advisors at the Penzance One Stop Shop. For help with your Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support query, please go to view our benefits pages, contact benefits online, or call 0300 1234 121.

  • Every Wednesday from 9.30am to 11.30pm (no need to book an appointment just drop in).

  • Storytime runs every Monday from 2pm to 3pm.
  • Rhymetime runs every Tuesday at 10.45am.
  • Lego Club runs the last Friday of every month between 3.45pm-4.45pm
  • Computer classes for beginners do you need help using a computer? Volunteer computer buddies are available on most Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 12.30pm.
  • Readers' groups - group meet on the second Wednesday in the month, 2:30pm-4pm. Contact the library one stop shop for more details. 
  • Creative writing group - every fourth Thursday of the month, between 10.30 and 12.00.  If you are interested in joining the group then please contact for further information.
  • Special events - we have a wide range of events taking place in libraries including author talks, drop-in events and much more. Find out if there are any special events taking place in a library near you.
  • Penzance Library has a comprehensive collection of Art books and exhibition catalogues.  The collection has an equal emphasis on Cornish and World Art and includes many rare and limited edition items. The art books available for loan are within the main library on the ground floor along with all of our Cornish art collection. The reference only general art books are located on the first floor in room 1.05 and are accessible from 9am to 12 noon Monday to Friday. Outside of these times, the room may be in use for wedding ceremonies so please check with the library using the contact number on this page if you are making a special journey to view this part of the collection. Alternatively, if there is a specific book that you wish to view please let us know and we will arrange for it to be available for you

  • Stock at St Ives Library reflects the modern schools of art featured at the nearby Tate of the West. It includes works on photography, fashion and design, and extensive information on the St Ives artists.
