Sand Chairs in Cornwall
Cornwall Mobility, in partnership with Disability Cornwall & Isles of Scilly, work with Cornwall Council as well as a diverse range of coastal charities and businesses in providing all-terrain wheelchairs, also known as sand chairs, for the public to use on a number of beaches in Cornwall.
The all-terrain wheelchairs have been designed for outdoor use and have large inflatable wheels which allow them to roll over sand and pebbles with remarkable ease. This has allowed people with mobility challenges the pleasure and freedom to access and enjoy Cornwall’s beaches where they may have found it more difficult in the past.
The all-terrain wheelchairs are not suitable for all beaches as some are too steep, remote and dangerous for the chairs to be used safely. Cornwall Mobility has ascertained that the beaches where it deploys these chairs for public use are safe and suitable for their use. It is however emphasised that these chairs are for access to the beach but are not suitable for use in the water or for accessing the water. The sand chairs are available along the Cornish coastline as indicated in the table and map below. It is advised that you contact the hire outlet beforehand to ensure that the sand chair is available.
