About Real Heroes Read Books

Why are we doing this?

We’ve created Real Heroes Read Books to improve literacy in Cornwall and to help children who are falling behind with the skills needed to start school.

Since 2013, the percentage of children in the UK reaching a good level of development by the end of their reception year has increased from 51.7% to 71.5%. But, more than one in four children still finish reception without key communication skills.

In Cornwall, this is 68.8%. To combat this, we’ve launched Real Heroes Read Books to inspire children by showing reading as a superpower. We want to encourage parents and carers to talk and read with their children as often as possible.

We’re also working with our library service to get more parents and children signed up to the library, so that we can make accessing books as easy as possible and inspire young imaginations.

We are really excited about the opportunity to support families to have fun reading and to encourage their children to learn to love books. We want to develop a love of language which will help them throughout life.
