NICE provide guidance to ensure quality and value for money. They provide independent, authoritative and evidence-based guidance on the most effective ways to prevent, diagnose and treat disease and ill health, reducing inequalities and variation.

The guidance is for the NHS, local authorities, charities, and anyone with a responsibility for commissioning or providing healthcare, public health or social care services.

NHS Evidence

NHS Evidence is a service that enables access to authoritative clinical and non-clinical evidence and best practice through a web-based portal. It helps people from across the NHS, public health and social care sectors to make better decisions as a result. NHS Evidence is managed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE)

The Prevention Library highlights emerging practice and research in the provision of prevention services in adult social care. It contains two types of content – examples of prevention services across England submitted by commissioners and providers together with references to recent research and related resources to support and inform the commissioning process.

National Institute for Health Research (INVOLVE)

The Evidence library, previously known as the invoNET library, has been developed for people with an interest in research into public involvement in research. It includes references and abstracts of reports and articles that cover:

  • the impact of public involvement on research
  • the nature and extent of public involvement in research, for example mapping public involvement
  • reflections on public involvement in research.

King’s Fund Library database

The King’s Fund Library Database is the online catalogue for the Information and Knowledge service of The King’s Fund and is freely available for use.

The database includes publications on policy and management of health and social care services. It does not cover clinical issues and treatments. All The King’s Fund publications from 1906 onwards are included, with other publications from 1979 to present.

Turning Research into Practice (Trip)

The TRIP (Turning Research into Practice) Database provides a searchable index of evidence-based health resources. As well as research evidence the search engine also provides searches across other content types including images, videos, patient information leaflets, educational courses and news. TRIP search tips are available here.

Reproductive Health Library

The WHO Reproductive Health Library (RHL) is a curated collection of high quality evidence in reproductive health, published by the World Health Organization. RHL contains summaries of primarily Cochrane systematic reviews on reproductive health interventions. The summaries include suggestions for clinicians (and where relevant for policy makers), especially in developing countries, on how to implement the evidence in healthcare practice.

Transfusion Evidence Library

The Transfusion Evidence Library is an up-to-date, freely available online library of transfusion-related systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials which is fully searchable by index terms as well as by free text, title, author, date and study type.

Evidence for Policy & Practice Coordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) 

Part of the Social Science Research Unit at the Institute of Education, University of London. The Database Library contains details of a large number of systematic reviews conducted by or supported by EPPI-Centre, covering topics ranging from alcoholism to youth offending - all available in full text.

Office for National Statistics (ONS)

ONS is responsible for the production of a wide range of economic and social statistics published at a national level but also down to small local geographies.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC)

HSCIC information is of value to commissioners, public health analysts, clinicians and informatics professionals in health and social care, as well as the public via the NHS.

They deliver a wide range of credible information resources to support the transformation of the NHS including topics on; population health analysis and surveys, health screening, clinical quality, prescribing, adult social care and NHS workforce.

HSCIC Indicator Portal

The Indicator Portal gathers together a number of health and social care indicators. Currently these include:

  • Compendium of Population Health Indicators (previously known as NCHOD)
  • Data for GP Practices
  • Local Basket of Inequalities Indicators
  • NHS Outcomes Framework
  • Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI)
