Council Farms reletting policy

Please read our information on how we are supporting residents and businesses, as well as information on affected services.

Re-letting policy

We let farms under the Agricultural Tenancies Act.

We provide Council Farms generally for progression purposes, i.e. as a stepping stone to a larger farm. The Council believes in providing equality for all applicants. Provided they match the formal selection criteria, in line with the Equal Opportunities Policy.

The Council has a mailing list of prospective applicants and advertises holdings available in the local press. We also advertise larger holdings in the Farmers Weekly. Existing tenants and external applicants have the opportunity in tendering for larger units on the Estate. This gives further opportunity to build enough capital to tender for larger farms in the private sector.

Re-letting procedure

Farms offered by open tender. Detailed letting particulars for holdings advertised are available upon request.

Viewing days are arranged for all potential applicants and their families to walk the holding. There will also be the opportunity to meet the Council's Land Agents.

The tenders, personal details and a business plan are submitted. The business plan should include:

  • an outline of the proposed business
  • budgets to show it's viability
  • a sign of future development

A short list is then produced. Financial and personal references taken up. Existing holdings inspected where appropriate and candidates subsequently interviewed.
