Access to Work

Access to Work is a Government grant scheme, which aims to support people that have a long term disability or health condition get back to work. (Long term means lasting or likely to last for at least 12 months.)

*The grant can pay for practical support to help you:

  • start working
  • stay in work
  • move into self-employment

*Each claim is individual and vary in factors, to the amounts Access to Work will fund.

You must:

  • be over 16 years old
  • live and work in England, Scotland or Wales
  • be in or about to start paid employment
  • have a disability or health condition that affects your ability to do your job or travel to work 

The Government define 'employment' in relation to the Access to Work scheme as:

  • paid work
  • self-employed
  • apprenticeship
  • Job Centre Plus Work Trial or work experience
  • Department of Education Supported Internship or Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) Traineeship

The Access to Work scheme can support you and your access to:

  • interview communication support
  • aids, equipment, software for you in your work place or adapting existing equipment to make it easier for you to use
  • a support service for mental health
  • money towards extra travel costs, if you can use available public transport or adaptions to your vehicle
  • training for your colleagues on disability
  • practical support like a Job Coach, note taker, lip speaker or interpreter
