CLO5 Summer moorland walking leader

Who is the course aimed at?

Those who have completed the related training course summer moorland walking leader with camping endorsement training (CLO4) or who have sufficient experience.  This qualification is the minimum requirement for those who are leading groups on Ten Tors or gold Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. 

This two day assessment assesses the candidate's ability to lead groups walking and camping in summer conditions in a moorland environment.  The practical element of the course will involve two day walks with an overnight camp, during which delegates will have to navigate competently in poor visibility, and organise and manage a group camping in a remote location.  They will also be required to complete a written paper as part of the assessment.  Candidates will be expected to carry all leader equipment and camping equipment appropriate to leading a group on a moorland expedition.

  • Campcraft in a remote location
  • Safe use of camping stoves

Delegates must be registered on the South West scheme and will receive a logbook and course handbook.

Delegates are required to equip themselves for walking/leading in a moorland environment and for an overnight camp on a remote campsite.
