Music First Access Grant Funding - School Agreement

First Access is one of the key initiatives of the government’s National Plan for Music Education. The aim of the First Access is to introduce students at Key Stages 1 – 3 to learning an instrument through weekly whole class instrumental lessons.

The funding can only be accessed for one term. It must be the first time that a class, or at least the majority of the class, have learnt any instrument through the scheme. Schools can access grants for several classes in their school, as long as those classes have not previously received First Access.

The whole class instrumental sessions funded by First Access last 45 minutes. A suitable qualified and experienced music teachers deilvers the sessions weekly. Schools are free to choose their own teacher. The Cornwall Music Education Hub website has a list of registered teachers, but schools may use any teacher who they believe to be suitable.

The classroom teacher is expected to take part in the sessions. The classes must not be treated as PPA cover. A key aim of the programme is to develop the musical skills and confidence of classroom teachers . The grant cannot be paid if the classroom teacher does not take part in the sessions.

Instruments are not automatically provided. If schools do not have their own whole class set, they should contact the Hub to arrange to hire a set from CMEH at a subsidised rate, buy their own or borrow from another
