Working with Schools

Cornwall’s children and young people are Cornwall’s future. Ensuring they receive the highest quality careers education, advice and guidance is vital to raising aspiration and improving their future employment and life chances.

Excellent careers education and guidance has never been more important. More vocational options are on offer. Research suggests that today’s young people will have roughly six careers and 17 jobs over their lifetime.

We know there is a significant gap between what young people know about the careers opportunities open to them and the actual jobs that exist. This is a key area with which local business professionals can help.

Work Experience is a government scheme where a student in Year 10 or above in a school has a placement on an employer's premises. The student carries out a particular task or duty, more or less as would an employee. The emphasis is on the learning aspects of the experience.

The experience involves:

  • taking on the role of a young worker
  • engaging in work tasks
  • using and developing work skills
  • being involved in work processes and
  • experiencing work environments.

Cornwall Education Business Partnership (EBP) leads on the organisation of the Cornwall Schools Approved Work Experience Scheme. Please visit their website for more information.

The Enterprise Adviser Network is a national scheme that links volunteers from the local business community with schools and colleges. This is to help bridge the gap between education and employment.

The aim is to help young people make more informed choices about their future careers. It ensures that employers are getting the skills they need from the workforce of tomorrow.

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership leads on this in Cornwall. This is done via the Cornwall Enterprise Adviser Network

For over twenty years Cornwall Education Business Partnership (EBP) has successfully delivered motivational programmes. These broaden the horizons of young people and raise their awareness of employment opportunities. Through the engagement of business and community groups these programmes have:

  • developed personal and teambuilding skills
  • investigated career choices
  • prepared employability ‘toolkits’ and
  • sampled employment through ‘taster days’ and work experience.

These interventions have increased young people’s self-awareness, self-esteem and motivation. They have also raised awareness of the benefits of lifelong learning.

If you’d like to be involved, please visit the Cornwall EBP website for more information.
