Developed in collaboration with Cornwall’s creative sector, Creative Cornwall Calling encourages members of the public to donate money to local projects. The Council has pledged £15,000 in match funding to the campaign – up to £1,000 is available to help boost individual projects.

Projects on the Crowdfunder campaign include:

  • Funding to build a Covid safe theatre which can be dismantled and resurrected across Cornwall.
  • Equipment for a touring cinema which helps bring the big screen to village halls, churches and community spaces.
  • A weeklong programme of creative and inspiring workshops, talks and experiences, led by industry professionals for people aged between 18 and 30 in North Cornwall.

Freelance creative industry 'decimated by Covid-19'

Catherine Lake from Cornish Freelancers is one of those who has listed her project on the site. She said: “Our industry was decimated by Covid-19. Many emergency funds had conditions attached which meant too many freelancers fell through the cracks and couldn’t access anything. This is why being part of Creative Cornwall Calling Crowdfunder is such a huge lifeline for us. The eligibility requirements have made it more accessible and they are one of the few Councils who are actually actively supporting freelancers to produce work.”

Fliss Loxley from the Pearl Exchange project, said: “At times of struggle it is the shared experiences of art and culture that offer some light relief, a new insight or an inspiring incentive.”

Innovative projects on Creative Cornwall Calling

Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for culture, economy and planning, said: “We know there are many creative freelancers who were not eligible for the Government’s coronavirus business support grants and many are in a really vulnerable position.

“I hope this Crowdfunder will help them to continue to earn a living doing what they do best. Having looked at some of the projects on Creative Cornwall Calling, it’s clear there are some excellent and innovative ideas.”
