Cornwall Council offers extra support for Europeans applying for settled status

Cornwall’s EU residents are being offered extra support to apply for settled status.

European citizens living in Cornwall who don’t hold British citizenship may need to apply for settled or pre-settled status to continue living and working in the UK from 2021.

The Council is offering a service to help scan ID documents for those who need it and do not wish to post their documents. It is also working with Inclusion Cornwall to offer support to applicants to the scheme.

Cornwall Council leader Julian German said: “We have made it clear that our European residents make a huge contribution to our communities and industries, and are proud that many of them have made Cornwall their home.

“I encourage anyone who needs to apply to submit your application, and to turn to us if you need support.

“Our European residents are our families, neighbours and friends. We want to do all we can to make sure that they can continue to live and work here after 2020.  We can’t change the Government’s scheme – but we can do our bit to make applications easier.”

Inclusion Cornwall can provide practical support to people who need help to complete their applications, including directing applicants to IT support or help for complex applications, as well as providing support for wider issues.

Inclusion Cornwall manager Andrea Gilbert said: “This type of support is extremely important for European citizens who need support to continue living and working here.

“We want to ensure that our most vulnerable residents are being supported with the help they need.

“Working with partners, we will do our best to make sure people are aware of decisions and arrangements that may affect them, as well as advice and support resources.”

If you, or someone you know, is having difficulties applying for settled status, please contact Inclusion Cornwall on 01872 326440 or by email at hello@inclusioncornwall.co.uk

Anyone who needs help completing an EU Settlement Scheme application can get support with the ID verification part of the process through the Council’s EU Settlement Scheme ID scanning service.

To book an appointment please contact Cornwall Registration Service on 0300 1234 181, between 9am-5pm on Monday to Friday for an appointment at Truro Registration Office, Dalvenie House, New County Hall, Truro TR1 3AY.

Applications to register for settled status are open until June 30, 2021, if the UK leaves the EU with a deal. In a no deal scenario, there will be an earlier deadline of December 31, 2020.

An open letter from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Leadership Board earlier this year made a similar call upon European residents, and over 2,000 applications were made in Cornwall by June.
