Research service

Cornwall Record Office and the Cornish Studies Library are now permanently closed to the public. This is to enable staff to prepare our collections for the move to Kresen Kernow in 2019. Personal visits to view the collections are no longer possible. We are however running a limited enquiries, copies and research service until December 2018. This is dependant on the availability of collections.

Cornwall Record Office (CRO) offers a paid research service carried out by our staff. We will carry out any kind of research enquiry using the full range of archives, microfilm and reference books available at CRO. Commonly consulted material includes:

  • parish records
  • census returns and
  • tithe awards

However, any collection of records can be searched.

Work is charged at £29 per hour (inclusive of VAT to UK/EU residents) with a minimum charge of £29. For Non-EU residents, the rate is £25 per hour. Where appropriate, up to five microfiche copies or photocopies are included in this price.

  1. Write to or email the Record Office with your enquiry. Include as much detail as possible about the subject to be researched. For example

         -   names, dates and parishes in the case of family history, or
         -   plans or maps in the case of house history

In order to fully benefit from this service, it is important that requests are clear and specific. We will consult our catalogues to check that we possess the relevant sources. Please do not send any money at this stage.

  2. A search authorisation form will be prepared according to the information provided. This will be sent to you to check and sign. Please send the completed form back to the Record Office.

  3. You will be contacted with the exact payment required once your research has been carried out. Payment can be made by cheque (payable to “Cornwall Council”). Alternatively, you can pay by debit/credit card over the telephone on +44 (0)1872 323127 during office hours. (Office hours are Monday to Friday, 09.00 - 16.30). Please note we are only able to accept payment in pounds sterling. When payment has been received the results of the research, together with any copies, will be sent in a typed report.

For more details about the records we hold, we recommend searching our online catalogues.
