Association to Cornwall area FAQs

Why do I need to have a strong association with the area?

For those that live in other counties, the commute to and from Cornwall is draining and is not conducive to a good home-work life balance. Additionally, any changes to duty systems impact more significantly on people who live outside of the county.  Therefore, all applicants will need to be residents (i.e. your primary address) of Cornwall or Plymouth (PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5) by your start date, as these are locations that are manageably commutable to the majority of the Community Fire Stations in Cornwall.

What is a strong association with Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly or Plymouth? Can I apply?

Strong association is defined as you have lived, or you or your partner’s immediate relative/s is/are living in Cornwall, the Isle of Scilly, or Plymouth.  Immediate relative is defined as parent/s, sibling/s, partner, child/ren or next of kin.

A Cornwall or Isles of Scilly address is defined as having a primary postal address that states Cornwall as your County, or Isles of Scilly as your home location.  A Plymouth address is defined as having the primary postcode prefix PL1, PL2, PL3, PL4, PL5.

We will require proof that you meet one or more of the criteria, as outlined below.  It will be up to you to clearly explain your connection at the application stage.  You will also be required to provide any supporting documents at a later stage, e.g. proof of address, birth certificate etc.

Do Transfer Applicants (‘Transferees’) need to meet this location requirement?

No.  The location association is a new initiative, therefore, we have allowed a ‘period of grace’ for current Firefighters to move to their preferred county. Additionally, we do not want this to adversely impact on underrepresented groups that are already in another Fire Service.

However, the person must be residing within Cornwall or Plymouth by their start date.

Do Apprentices need to meet this location requirement?

Yes, we need to ensure the person can afford and be supported locally during their two year commitment.

Does the Isles of Scilly count in the Cornwall ‘restriction’?

Yes.  However, the applicant must reside in Cornwall or Plymouth upon their start date.
