Bedtime Safety Check

You're three times more likely to die in a fire that starts during the night so get into the habit of completing these checks and help protect yourself and your home.

Before going to bed, make sure you:

  • Close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading.
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on – like your freezer.
  • Check your cooker is turned off.
  • Don’t leave the washing machine on.
  • Turn heaters off and put up fireguards.
  • Put candles and cigarettes out properly.
  • Make sure exits are kept clear.
  • Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them.
  • If you use an electric blanket, make sure it's turned off.
  • Before buying nightwear, check for guidance on labelling. A label that reads 'low flammability' does not indicate a completely flameproof product.
