Line Rescue Unit

Cornwall has two Line Rescue Units (LRUs). These are based at Tolvaddon and Bodmin Community Fire Station. 6 specially trained wholetime and on-call personnel crew the LRUs. They carry a range of equipment designed for providing the safest system of work for accessing a difficult situation such as a mine shaft or roof. One of the LRUs is fitted with a rear mounted Palfinger HIAB crane which can lift up to 4000kg.

  • Ground anchor plates
  • Tirfor winches
  • Lighting equipment and generator
  • Enhanced rope rescue equipment
  • Lifting strops
  • Animal rescue equipment
  • Confined space communication equipment

The LRU is automatically mobilised to all incidents involving mineshaft rescues. It can also be requested to incidents such as:

  • rescues from roofs
  • cliff rescues (usually undertaken by HM Coastguard)
  • any situation that the incident commander deems necessary
