The main purpose of the ICU is to act as a link between the incident ground and the Critical Control Centre (based in Tolvaddon). It relays messages from the incident commander. The ICU also acts as a conference area for Incident and sector commanders from all emergency services. This is used to formulate a plan of attack for an incident.

The ICU’s are fitted with a 6KV vehicle driver generator. They also have a standalone generator to power ancillary equipment on the vehicle. These units are automatically mobilised to certain incidents including:

  • those with over 4 pumping appliances
  • chemical incidents
  • or at the request of the incident commander.
