Volunteer working at Penmount Crematorium Gardens

We are now in a position to allow volunteer workers to help out in the grounds.

Penmount has 28 acres of land. 11 acres of this are laid out to formal memorial gardens.

Much of the upkeep is centred on weeding and edging the beds and borders.

Our permanent gardeners are required to address more specialised tasks around Penmount. These are needed for the grounds to be maintained within a regular seasonal timescale. We hope the introduction of volunteer workers will allow this. Even an odd hour here and there will help.

Areas of the gardens will be allocated to volunteer workers along with set tasks. If preferred a special section of the gardens around where a memorial is situated may be requested to work on.

Volunteer workers with skills in horticultural duties may wish to offer their skills in other areas of work around the grounds. This can be discussed and may be possible to arrange, as long as:

  • it fits in with the pre-scheduled annual garden tasks and
  • is within Health and Safety guidelines

There are a few requirements we need in place before work can commence.

  • Please complete a volunteer registration form before you contact us to offer your help. These should be returned to Penmount crematorium.
  • We will require at least 2 days’ notice before you come on site to help out. Just ring the main line 01872 272871 and ask for Graham.

On your first visit you will be met by a named member of staff. They will go through a short induction and signing of the volunteer agreement form. You will be expected to complete a volunteer timesheet each time you are on site. This will remain on file at the crematorium.

We will provide:

  • the tools for the work you wish to help with
  • any necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • a fluorescent waistcoat to show other staff and visitors you are a volunteer worker.

We would ask if you could wear sturdy footwear, and bring your own waterproofs if needed.

We hope you enjoy your time with us in the gardens. We would like to thank you for your interest in helping keep the grounds in the condition they deserve.
