Adoption Contact Register

The Adoption Contact Register provides a way for adopted people and their relatives to register their interest in contacting one another.

The Register is in two parts: Part one for adopted people and Part two for their relatives.

Find birth relatives if you were adopted

Adopted people aged 18 years or over may apply to be registered on Part One. The Registrar General must hold a record of his or her birth.

The fee is £15 and instructions on how to pay can be found on the form.

For people adopted in Scotland a separate voluntary service is provided. Information may be obtained from:  Birth Link, Family Care, 21 Castle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3DN.

Find someone who was adopted if you’re a birth relative

Any person aged 18 years or over and who is related to an adopted person may apply to be registered on Part Two. It is necessary to provide evidence to satisfy the Registrar General of their relationship to the adopted person.

Relatives can include the adopted person's birth parents, brothers and sisters and any other person related by blood, half-blood or marriages It does not include adoptive relatives.

If relatives prefer not to use their own address, they may choose to register the address of an intermediary through which contact will be made.

Apply to be added to part 2 of the register

The fee is £30 and instructions on how to pay can be found on the form.

  • The 'link' is made when a registration on Part one coincides with a registration in Part two.
  • The adopted person will be given the name and address of their relative, or that of the relative's intermediary, as appropriate. The relative, or their intermediary, will be informed that their details have been passed to the adopted person.
