Cornwall Council has facilitated a large number of projects using European funding to develop initiatives in Cornwall. Many of these can be found on www.convergencecornwall.com/. Other more modest marine, transportation, education, social and environmental projects work quietly behind the scenes to ensure that Cornwall continues to grow with the rest of Europe.

Cornwall Council has contributed to a large number of these projects to ensure the success of European funding programmes.

MERiFIC (Marine Energy in Far Peripheral and Island Communities)

The MERiFIC project seeks to advance the adoption of marine energy across the two regions of Cornwall and Finistère and the island communities of le Parc Naturel Marin d’Iroise and the Isles of Scilly. Project partners will work together to identify the specific opportunities and issues faced by peripheral and island communities in exploiting marine renewable energy resources with the aim of developing tool kits and resources for use by other similar communities. The project will develop and deliver joint activities between the two regions, looking at issues such as Marine energy resource assessment/mapping; Policy issues and potential barriers to marine energy development; Business and commercial opportunities for island/mainland communities; Island/mainland interaction on appropriate infrastructure and Community and stakeholder engagement with key groups (e.g. fishing, wave farm developers, and investors).

UNICREDS

UNICREDS  The project ran from 2010 – 2012, working with European partners on a transferable economic model for the development of regional knowledge based economies. Central to the UNICREDS concept are multi-centred, collaborative universities which link education and research with the needs of local authorities, businesses and communities in peripheral regions.

There are four strands to the project:

  • Economic Development of the Marine Leisure Industry
  • Environmental Awareness and Protection in the Marine Leisure Industry
  • Social Inclusion in the Marine Leisure Industry
  • Project Management and Joint Partnership Actions

RESGEN (From Research Infrastructure to Sustainable Energy and Reduction of CO2 Emissions)

The overall objective of RESGen project is to create realistic grounds and practical tools for developing regional energy self sufficiency, and potential innovative regional research-driven clusters across the EU analysis of regional sustainable energy policies and research agendas at EU, national and regional level, improving understanding of the sustainable energy concept in EU and definition of Joint Action Plans for further collaboration.
