Information for young carers

Introduction

Young carers are young people, aged 18 and under, who have the responsibility of looking after someone at home. This person can be a parent or guardian, grandparent, relative or friend who is ill, has a disability, suffers with mental ill-health, or has problems related to drugs and/or alcohol.

Because they spend a lot of time looking after another person, young carers can often experience difficulties. At home, young carers may have a lot of work to do such as the housework, shopping, laundry, cooking meals, paying the bills or helping the person they care for to have a bath, use the toilet or get dressed. Some young carers might have difficulties at school if they are often late, or don't finish homework on time, or because they may sometimes miss school to stay at home and care for their relative or friend. Young carers may also miss out on social activities if it is difficult for them to leave the person they care for, or to get to where they would like to go.

Cornwall Young Carers Project (CYCP) have recently changed their name to Kernow Young Carers, as chosen by the young carers themselves, in partnership with Action for Children who have now won the contract for providing the service.

Kernow Young Carers empowers and advocates individual young carers between the ages of 4 and 18 years to sustain their caring role by informing, helping, and arranging time out and listening to them. The project also provides great benefits to the young people of Cornwall by ensuring that their voice is heard.

Anyone can contact Kernow Young Carers if they are a young carer, or if they know of a young carer, who might benefit from some extra help or support. The Young Carers Project worker will arrange to meet the young carer to talk about the services and help they might like.

Meetings are very informal and can be at home, at school or at another convenient place, where the young carer can have a friend, parent, teacher or another person with them if they want.
