Retained Firefighter : Image of a FirefighterFire Stations Recruit for Retained Firefighters

St Ives and Penzance Fire Station are holding a Retained Recruitment Evening at Penzance Fire Station on Monday 19th May at 7pm.

Fire Stations in the Lizard area are also asking for people interested in joining the Retained Fire Service to apply as soon as possible.  There are currently vacancies at all three Lizard area fire stations – Helston, St Keverne and Mullion.

The Retained Fire Service is made up of men and women who come from all walks of life and is keen to represent as wide a demographic as possible. As such, the Brigade would particularly like to encourage women and other unrepresented groups to consider joining.

Interested individuals are invited to come along, attend a working drill night, observe training and ask questions before being put through their paces and take a physical and written test.

If you can answer 'yes' to the following questions, then this could be the new career for you:

  • Are you physically fit?
  • Do you hold a minimum of a provisional driving licence?
  • Do you live / work within 4 minutes of the fire station?

Attendees do not have to have already completed an application form, as these will be provided on the night but they will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear to carry out the physical tests.

Dave Carlisle, Station Officer at Penzance says, "We hope to see a good number of interested applicants coming along to see exactly what the Fire Service can offer them as Retained Firefighters. Applicants should have a good level of fitness as we will be asking them to take the Chester Step Test, as well as a written test."

Applications are available from Brigade HQ Personnel, call the Recruitment Hotline on 01872 323758 or contact your local station. Completed applications will need to be returned to Brigade HQ Personnel by Monday 9th June 2008 and successful candidates from the recruitment evening will be called to interview at their chosen Station before Wednesday 25th June 2008. The training courses to become a Retained Firefighter will begin in Autumn 2008.

RTA Awareness Day : Firefighters cutting the visitors out of a mock crash siteRTA Awareness Day at Truro Fire Station

Firefighters from Truro Fire Station held a Road Traffic Accident Awareness day on Monday 12th May to teach a group of 16 and 17 year olds the dangers of reckless driving.

The students were first of all taken through a presentation of what can happen in a bad car accident and shown graphic images of real injuries received in such incidences.

Zoe Lea who was one of the passengers said, "It was weird being in the car while it was being cut, there were a lot of bumps and bangs which was quite scary. I definitely wouldn't want to be cut out of a car for real!"

Is your business up to date?

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

The responsibility for fire safety lies with employers, the self-employed with premises, voluntary organisations, those responsible for buildings with public access, and any contractor who exercises a degree of control over any premises.

These 'responsible persons' have a duty to ensure the safety of everyone who uses their premises, and those in the immediate vicinity who may be at risk if there is a fire.

These rules apply to most places except private houses, and make fire safety law easier to understand.  The government have done away with the previous 70 separate pieces of legislation, and replaced them with a new regime focused on preventing fires happening in the first place.

Anyone responsible for premises must have carried out a Fire Safety Risk Assessment by 1st October 2006. The Fire and Rescue Service will carry out inspections, and failure to comply could lead to enforcement action or even prosecution.

The introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order (RRO), whilst strengthening the Fire Authorities role as an 'enforcer', has seen the abolishment of both the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and the Fire Precautions Workplace Regulations 1997, (as amended) 1999.

Please click here to view all information relating to the Regulatory Reform Order
(including guidance documents and online self assessment).

Disability Cornwall : Logo of Disability CornwallDisability Cornwall

Firefighters in West Cornwall are keen to build on the success of a recent project.  The project involved developing positive links between operational Firefighters and individuals or groups with physical or learning disabilities in the area.
Firefighters want to develop the project further and would like to hear from any disability groups or individuals with disabilities who would like to receive a free home fire safety check.
