Bulky Waste Collections

The Council provides a Bulky Waste Collection service for householders which covers items that are too large to be picked up by the standard refuse or recycling collections, or that people cannot transport to the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) themselves.

If you wish to arrange a collection, please arrange a collection online. There is information on what can and cannot be collected and how much it costs using the links below.

Book and pay for a bulky waste collection

Standard bulky waste items collected

Generally a standard item is something that you would take with you when you move house e.g tables, chairs fridges, beds.

Please view our list of standard items collected by the bulky waste service.  This is a chargeable service which is charged as follows:

  • Up to four items - £21.00 total
  • Additional items - £8.00 each (maximum of four)
  • Maximum total collection cost is £53.00 for eight items

To arrange and pay for a collection please use the link above or call 0300 1234 141.

A request for more than eight items requires a separate booking, which has the £21.00 standard fee applied again. There are no concessions on these fees.

Bulky waste items requiring a special collection

Some non standard items can be collected as either small or large special items.  Please view the special small bulky waste items and special large bulky waste items lists for information on those items that require a special collection, and for more information on item sizes.

Charges for special items are;

  • For a large item - £32
  • For a small item - £19.00

Items that cannot be collected

Some items will not be accepted. Please follow the link to find out what bulky waste items are not collected.

Leaving your bulky waste items out for collection

When you book your collection you will be advised of the day of collection or informed that a member of our team will contact you to confirm a collection day.

When placing out your bulky waste for pre-arranged collection, residents are asked to identify a suitable and safe collection point within the boundary of their property, but as near to the normal waste collection point as is practically possible. The Council can provide advice if you experience difficulty in placing out bulky items for collection.

The terms and conditions for the bulky waste collections can be found at bulky waste terms and conditions.

Other options for bulky items

There are many ways to recycle or reuse bulky items including charity shops, recycling companies, local adverts, freecycle, junk swaps and car boot sales. If you are able to transport items yourself, most towns have their own auction rooms, which are a good way of selling and buying second hand items.

You can take items free-of-charge to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres (HWRC’s) in Cornwall.

Alternatively, the following community projects will accept donations and offer a collection service to householders for useable goods. Donated furniture and household items are offered at affordable prices to people on low incomes.Heartlands Front

  • SITA Cornwall work in partnership with Heartlands Furniture, a furniture re-use organisation   which is based in Pool Business Park, Dudnance Lane, Pool, Redruth and which provides good quality affordable furniture and appliances to people on benefits and low incomes. The store, which also accepts direct donations from the public and businesses, is open Monday to Friday, from 9.30am to 4.30pm and can be contacted on 01209 710422

What happens to the bulky waste we collect

Heartlands Showroom

The eight year collection, re-use and recycling contract with SITA Cornwall is designed to maximise re-use of the collected items and to recycle as much as possible from the items that are not suitable to be reused.

Wood and metals are separated for recycling by SITA UK with all electronic and electrical equipment sent to specialist preprocessors. On average we reuse or recycle 46% of all of the items that we collect.

Trade waste

Requests from business/ trading organisations to collect items will not be accepted by the bulky waste collection services. Please refer to our Business Waste pages for further information on how unwanted items can be disposed of.
