We have a 30 year contract with SITA Cornwall Ltd to manage and dispose of our municipal waste. The contract started in 2006 and includes developing new and improved recycling facilities, including household waste and recycling centres, material recovery facilities, composting facilities, landfill development waste transfer stations and the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre, a new energy from waste facility with combined heat and power.
It took longer than originally expected to get planning permission for the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre. As a result, we revised our project agreement with SITA Cornwall Ltd in 2013 and extended our contract to 31 August 2039.
You can request a copy of the revised project agreement by emailing your full name and address to email@example.com or using the contact details on this page. A small part of the content is commercially sensitive and isn’t available.
Household waste and recycling centres
There are 13 household waste and recycling centres in Cornwall where residents can take bulky waste, green waste and recycling that isn’t collected as part of the household rubbish and recycling collections. Sixty two percent of the material received at the centres is recycled.
Material recovery facilities
There are material recovery facilities at Pool and Bodmin where dry recyclables from household recycling collections are sorted and sent to recycling reprocessors. There is also a waste education centre at the Bodmin facility.
Our only operational landfill site is at Connon Bridge. It will be used until the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre is completed in 2016. After that Connon Bridge will be used to landfill the small amounts of waste the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre can’t process until the landfill site’s planning permission ends in 2018.
Waste transfer stations
There are waste transfer stations at St Erth, Newquay, St Austell, Launceston and Pool. Waste from household rubbish collections is taken to these stations and combined into larger lorry loads that then go to the Connon Bridge landfill site.
Cornwall Energy Recovery Facility
Work is underway on the Cornwall Energy Recovery Facility and is expected to be completed in spring 2016.
