Safer Workplace Better Business

Safer Workplace Better Business (SWBB) pack is a simple, jargon-free system developed by the Devon Health and Safety Sub Group, a working group of the ten Local Authorities in Devon, to help small businesses comply with health and safety law. It is a simple to use tool-kit based around the principles of the nationally recognised "Safer Food Better Business", pack produced by the Food Standards Agency to assist small catering businesses to meet European food hygiene requirements. The SWBB pack is similar, but aims to ensure that small businesses can comply with requirements of current Health and Safety standards.

Businesses must be able to show they have assessed all aspects of their business in order to have a plan in place to control the risks identified. This is not only staff but any visitors to the premises, including customers and contractors. The pack is designed to help businesses identify these risks by already producing easy to read sheets for each risk area, that are easy to understand and complete.

Each colour coded section explains the employer's duties, the actions required, and allows the employer to document policies, controls and procedures they implement within their business. The pack will save time and money because much of the work has already been done.

Areas covered include:

  • Risk Assessment.
  • Electricity/gas safety.
  • First Aid.
  • Asbestos.
  • Legionella.
  • Working at height.
  • Slips and trips.
  • Manual handling.
  • Machinery safety.
  • Keeping accident books.
  • Recording staff training.

Once completed the pack will enable the business to identify the key hazards in their workplace, introduce suitable control measures and have a documented system available for inspection by enforcement officers. It may also improve bottom line profits by reducing accidents, costs, safeguarding staff and improving production.
