Starting school

If your child was born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011, you will need to apply for a school place for September 2015. 

You can apply online for an infant/primary school place by following the link below.

The deadline for applications is 23.59pm on 15 January 2015.

Alternatively, you can download and complete a Starting Infant/Primary School paper application form.  The application form is also available at your local One Stop Shop or on request from the School Admissions Team.

All the information you need to consider when applying and what happens next can be found in the Starting School - September 2015 booklet. Some of this information is also included below. We strongly recommend that you read this carefully before making your application.

The application form allows you to list up to three schools in order of preference.  All of your preferences will be considered equally and if we are able to offer a place at more than one of your preferred schools we will offer a place at the one you have ranked highest.  Naming a second or third preference does not give you any less chance of getting a place at your first preference school.  If you do not name a second or third preference and we are not able to allocate a place at your preferred school then we will allocate a place at the nearest school with a place available.

Please be aware that ‘expressing a preference’ is not the same as ‘choosing’ a school.  Whether or not your preference can be met depends on the availability of places and your priority for a place according to the oversubscription criteria.

When applying online you can change your preference(s) right up to the deadline of 23:59 on 15 January 2015.  However, please remember that if you edit your application, it is essential that you resubmit it – failure to do so will result in a non-application.  If you have sent in a paper application form you will need to write to the School Admissions Team to tell them you want to change your preference(s).  This must be received by 15 January 2015.

If you submit an online application by 23:59 on 15 January 2015 you will receive an email on 16 April 2015 in addition to a letter which will be sent by post on the same day. If you submit a paper application by 15 January 2015 we will post you a letter on 16 April 2015. 

The majority of children start school full-time in the September following their fourth birthday.  However, in some cases parents believe that starting part-time or starting later in the school year would be more appropriate for their child.  Visit the Deferring or delaying admission to school and educating pupils out of their chronological year group page for more information.

The letter will tell you whether you have been allocated a place at your second or third preference schools. If you did not name any other preferences or your other preference schools are also full, your child will be offered a place at the nearest school with room.

If you are not allocated a place at your preferred school you will have the right to appeal to an independent panel - the letter will tell you how to do this. You will have 20 school days after you receive your notification to appeal the decision. Appeals must then be heard within 40 school days of this deadline.

If your child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs or Education, Health and Care Plan, you will have the right of appeal to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. However, in the first instance, you will be advised to contact the Assessment and Education Provision Team (Tel: 0300 1234 101).

If you are currently living outside Cornwall and want to apply for a school place within the County your application must be made via your home Local Authority.  However, if you have a confirmed address in Cornwall, evidenced by either a signed rental agreement or completed proof of purchase, you can apply direct to Cornwall Council.

Similarly, if you live in Cornwall and wish to apply for a school in another county, your application must be made via Cornwall Council unless you have evidence of an address as stated above. 

Any applications to start in an infant or primary school received after the deadline of 23:59 15 January 2015 will be treated as a late application.  For more information on how late applications will be processed please refer to the Starting School - September 2015 booklet.
