Start Infant or Primary School

If your child was born between 01 September 2009 and 31 August 2010, you will need to apply for a school place for September 2014. 

How do I apply?


The deadline for applications was 23.59 on 15 January 2014.

From 16 January 2014 the online application form for Infant or Primary School will no longer be available.  You can still apply for an Infant or Primary School place by completing and returning a Starting Infant/Primary School Application paper form.

Any applications to start an Infant or Primary School received after the deadline of 23:59 15 January 2014 will be treated as a late application.  For more information on how late applications will be processed please refer to page 9 of the Starting School - September 2014 Booklet.

All the information you need on what to consider, how to apply and what happens afterwards can be found in the Starting School - September 2014 Booklet.  We strongly recommend that you read this carefully before making your application.

It is also important that you are aware of how applications will be ranked and places allocated at your preferred school(s) - this is known as the Oversubscription Criteria. Please visit the Admissions Arrangements page for more details.

If you submitted an online application by 23:59 on 15 January 2014 you will receive an email on 16 April 2014 in addition to a letter which will be sent by on the same day. If you submit a paper application by 15 January 2014 we will send you a letter on 16 April 2014. 

If you change your mind and wish to express a preference for a different school, please put your request in writing to the School Admissions Team.  Please note that your changed preference(s) would be processed as a late application unless it is sent before 14 February 2014 (after which the allocation process will begin) and considered to be exceptional.

The majority of children start school full-time in the September following their fourth birthday.  However, in some cases parents believe that starting part-time or starting later in the school year would be more appropriate for their child.  Visit the following page for more information: Deferring or delaying admission to school and educating pupils out of their chronological year group

PLEASE NOTE: The online application system will be unavailable between Friday 18 April and the afternoon of Monday 21 April 2014 due to essential maintenance.  We apologise for any inconvenience.

The letter will tell you whether you have been allocated a place at your second or third preference schools. If you did not name any other preferences or your other preference schools are also full, your child will be offered a place at the nearest school with room (measured as an actual distance by the nearest available route).

If you are not allocated a place at your preferred school you will have the right to appeal to an independent panel - the letter will tell you how to do this. You will have 20 school days after you receive your notification to appeal the decision. Appeals must then be heard within 40 school days of this deadline.

If your child has a Statement of Special Educational Needs, you will have the right of appeal to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. However, in the first instance, you will be advised to contact the Assessment and Education Provision Team (Tel: 0300 1234 101).

If you are currently living outside Cornwall and want to apply for a school place within the county, either during the school year or at one of the standard points of entry, your application must be made via your home Local Authority.  However, if you have a confirmed address in Cornwall, evidenced by either a signed rental agreement or completed proof of purchase, you can apply direct to Cornwall Council.

Similarly, if you live in Cornwall and wish to apply for a school in another county, your application must be made via Cornwall Council unless you have evidence of an address as stated above.
