Safeguarding on off site visits with 'Visit
Adviser’
An exciting and innovative opportunity for those of you and your
colleagues who own an iphone. Cornwall Learning has developed
an app called Visit Adviser which creates a
planner customised to your upcoming visit.
The app takes a few minutes to lead you through a series of
questions related to your visit. It then creates a PDF which is an
aide-memoire to your planning. This is then available on your
phone and can also be emailed to you, or air printed if you have
that facility.
It also generates a final week set of checks pushed daily to
your calendar to make sure the essential safety elements are
covered. If you work with trainees or New Teachers, please
direct them to this app to help them plan their first school trips
safely.
As far as we know this is the first app of this kind developed
in the UK. It is available to download from the Apple app
store free of charge on your iphone. Just search for
‘Visit Adviser’.
We hope you will find it useful, ensuring visits are safe:
if you do, please leave a review at the app store.
Explorer Project at Carnyorth Educational
Centre
The Explorer Project is well under way at two schools in West
Cornwall, St Madderns and St Mary’s RC school. We are doing the
activity in both schools with years 3, 4, 5 and 6 which is an extra
challenge for the centre staff but it seems to be working well with
the younger children being helped by the older. Both schools
have had a fun day of team building, finding out about 4 British
explorers and designing their own willow classroom, with the
children helping to plant the willow structure. They were excited
to see how it had developed from willow sticks to a woven structure
with tunnels and pods.
Teresa Rowe, Head at St Madderns, wanted more than a willow
classroom, so the team spent another day creating a large apple
orchard with a variety of apple trees including some Cornish
varieties; an edible hedge made of autumn raspberries, white
currant and black currant bushes; and a new wild flower border sown
with 3 different seed mixes to attract bees, butterflies and
ladybirds. Teresa said she had always envisaged a group of
children sitting in the shade of an apple tree reading their books,
hopefully this could happen now. We would like to work with
the children to make some mosaic stepping stones to place in the
border so that the children can walk through the flowers and
observe the wildlife which hopefully will be more than snails and
slugs!
St Mary’s RC had the biggest willow structure that the Carnyorth
staff has ever made but it needed to be big to fit 30 plus
children. It has a church like feel to it with a large arch
entrance and top edging that looks like it should have stained
glass in it. Anne Tryhorn, Deputy Head, said it had been
great fun making it in spite of the rain all day, which was
actually perfect conditions for the willow plants.
