Historic environment projects
The wealth of the visible historic
environment in Cornwall provides the background to a strong track
record of survey and assessment projects, grounded in major surveys
of Bodmin Moor and West Penwith in the 1980s. Through surveys to
identify the historic resource and provide recommendations for its
management we have developed an in-depth understanding of the
character and development of the historic environment in Cornwall.
Examples include:
- Property and area surveys for the National Trust, English
Heritage, Local Authorities, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Ministry of
Defence, Highways Agency
- Ornamental landscapes - e.g. Ethy (National Trust),
Whiteford (Duchy of Cornwall)
- The Monuments Management Project for English Heritage:
evaluation of importance for monument classes and production of
scheduling proposals. Details of this project are available on the
'Site Conservation' pages on this website.
- Isles of Scilly Rapid
Coastal Zone Assessment; pilot study for English Heritage to
identify the historic resource to the 12 nautical mile limit and
identify issues affecting the future conservation of the
resource
- West Cornwall HEATH Project:
archaeological and management assessments were carried out on more
than 50 areas of heath and downland in west Cornwall, aimed at
providing landowners and managers with improved information in
these important areas of landscape. An extensive outreach programme
was carried out. Booklets are available on the Archaeology
of the moors, downs and heaths of West Cornwall and on
Managing
archaeology and historic landscapes on west Cornwall's rough
ground, together with a self-guided trail leaflet:
The
past in the present: a walk through 6000 years of
history on Woon Gumpus, Chun Downs and Botallack, Truthwall,
Carnyorth and Trewellard Commons, St Just
- Estuary audits for Fal, Fowey and Helford, available as
Historic Environment
publications
- In 1994, The Historic Environment Service pioneered the
methodology for Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC),
undertaking the first countywide characterisation
