What is a carer?

You are a carer if you provide regular and substantial unpaid help to someone who cannot manage without your support. You may not live in the same house, and you do not have to be related to the person you look after.

The person you care for may be:

  • A frail older person
  • Someone with a physical or learning disability
  • Someone with mental ill health
  • Someone with dementia
  • Someone who has a long-term illness or condition

Carers Emergency Card Scheme

Would you like a safety net to support you in your caring role? The carer emergency card scheme is designed to provide you with peace of mind that your contingency plans are known to all in case any unplanned emergency occurs.  Please follow the link to find out more.

How do you get help?

As a carer, you have a right to an assessment from Adult Care and Support. This is the first step towards getting support in a range of ways.

If you would like to request a carers assessment, you can speak to the Access Team by completing the Request Help for Adults referral form, via an email to adultcareandsupport@cornwall.gov.uk or by calling 0300 1234 131.

Adult Care and Support provides a range of support for the person you care for and for carers. This support can include:

  • providing paid care workers to help with bathing and dressing
  • providing equipment, meals or adaptations to the home

Services for carers could include:

  • help to have a break from caring
  • counselling
  • help with other responsibilities such as childcare
  • emotional support

Carers Forum

The Council is committed to establishing a carer’s forum and database which will allow you to discuss issues relating to your caring responsibilities with other colleagues. By being on the database you will receive regular information about being a carer.
