Last Friday I attended a Fashion Show organised by the Chair of
the Fund Raising & Publicity Committee for Emmaus Cornwall.
Emmaus are a self-help organisation helping homeless people to
help themselves. In exchange for safe and secure
accommodation, homeless people are given the opportunity to work
and contribute to the welfare of others. Emmaus gives
homeless people a chance to rebuild their lives by raising their
self-esteem and demonstrating to them that they do have a place in
society. Volunteers from all walks of life, with a wide range
of life skills, are given extensive training in order that they can
assist those needing help.
The Citizens for Life Awards participants and their mentors put
on an excellent performance. The icing on the cake was the
presence of Terry Waite CBE (President of Emmaus UK). He
joined into the spirit of the evening by taking part in the show
and giving a short but memorable speech which suited the
On the Saturday I participated in the official opening of the
first Emmaus Cornwall social enterprise shop in St Austell.
Once again Terry Waite did the honours.
In recognising the work carried out by Emmaus, Cornwall Council
once again is able to thank the voluntary sector for the huge
contribution that they make to the lives of the residents in
