Results of the Police and Crime Commissioner Election for the
Devon and Cornwall Police Area, held on Thursday 15 November
2012.
You can also view information about the number of votes verified in each of the voting
areas.
Election results
Under the supplementary vote system used for the Police and
Crime Commissioner Elections, a voter is required to indicate their
first and second preference candidates on the ballot paper.
If a candidate receives more than half of all first choice
votes, they are elected immediately.
If this does not happen, the two candidates with the most first
choice votes go through to a second round. All other candidates are
eliminated, but the eliminated candidates second choice votes
for either of the top two candidates are added to the totals for
those two candidates from the first round.
The candidate with the highest combined total of first and
second choice votes will be elected as the Police and Crime
Commissioner for the police force area.

After the first round of counting, the total number of valid
first preference votes cast for each of the candidates is as

As no candidate received more than 50% of the valid first
preference votes every local Returning Officer will now count the
second preference votes for the candidates who are not eliminated
from the contest.

Verification of votes
The ballot papers marked by voters at each polling station were
verified overnight from 10pm on polling day Thursday 15
November.
The number of ballot papers in each ballot box was verified
against a ballot paper account completed by the Presiding Officer
in charge of each polling station.
