Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) are
taking delivery of a new vehicle this week to be used by its new
Home Safety Operative to promote and deliver home fire safety checks.
The Mercedes LWB Vito Van will sport all new
livery and safety messages to make it easily identifiable as Darren
Berrey, who is taking on the new role of Home Safety Operative from
within CFRS, takes it around Cornwall to carry out free home fire
safety checks.
Darren says: “I’m excited by my new role and
from 01 August, I will be using my time and resources to contact
those in our community known to be at greatest risk of having a
fire in their home. Research has shown that those aged over 60;
people who live alone or are lone parents; or those with a
disability or limiting condition are most at risk and may benefit
from a home fire safety check and advice. We receive referrals for
home fire safety checks from partners; as a
result of community action days; talks to groups in high risk areas
and by asking the media to highlight the service, especially after
a significant fire. ”
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service want everyone
to be safe in their home. If you are not in one of our target
groups, there is plenty of help and advice on the CFRS pages on the
Cornwall Council website where you can also request a free
home fire safety check, or call the free phone telephone helpline
on 0800 3581 999.
