Checklist for SENCOs and Senior Managers

  • SEN role clear in job descriptions
  • Named SENCo
  • SENCo and staff clear on SENCo role, including the self-evaluation and monitoring of the school’s SEN provision
  • Headteacher clear on SEN responsibilities
  • Long, medium and short-term, school improvement plans refer to SEN
  • Evidence of staff and SENCo liaison
  • SEN procedures clear – Record of Need and Graduated Approach
  • IEPs conform to Code of Practice requirements, are monitored and reviewed and parents and pupils are involved
  • IEPs match to statements and pupils’ needs
  • Statements are reviewed annually, according to the Code of Practice and parents and pupils involved
  • Use is made of external agencies
  • SEN policy matches recommendations of the Code of Practice
  • Governing body has named governor for SEN
  • Clear and transparent allocation of resources to SEN, identified in the policy document
  • Sufficient staff for SEN; deployment is effective and efficient
  • Suitable accommodation
  • Adequate resources/how they are used
  • Discuss progress of pupils, allocation of resources, according to pupils’/priority need with headteacher and governing body
  • Staff development on SEN is available for all staff to ensure they are fully aware of their responsibilities
