Communities decide on local grants
U-Choose is all about you - the people that live in an
area decide how to spend a set amount of public money.
If you have an idea to improve the area where you live and other
residents agree, then you could get some money to turn your idea
into reality.
U-Choose for Cornwall is part of a new Government scheme called
"Participatory Budgeting".
It brings communities closer to council decision-making,
enabling local people to have a direct influence on how budgets are
spent.
Starting with public votes to decide on small grants, the scheme
could in future extend to major council spending like transport and
leisure.
As Community Networks develop, it is envisaged that U-Choose
(participatory budgeting) will be used extensively and in time will
focus more upon influencing mainstream service delivery rather than
simply allocating small grants.
Pilot Events
So far three successful pilot U-Choose events have taken
place:-
- Pengegon, Parc an Tansys and Gwelmor
- Redruth North
- Treneere
- China Clay Area
- Truro
