Introduction

Photograph of ledgersThese pages provide information about the main types of records held by Cornwall Record Office. The documents are set in their proper context, so that researchers can recognise and make use of a variety of sources. The sections generally reflect the way that records are sorted and listed at the Record Office, although pages within the sections are grouped for ease of navigation rather than by archival origin.

Each section describes a series of records, incorporating administrative histories and guidance on use where appropriate. Details of most of the records available are included. Please note any references given and check them in the online catalogues, CRO Online Catalogue and Access to Archives (it may be necessary to check both catalogues).

Cross-references may take you to other sections of the guide, dealing with documents on a similar subject or in some way related. Nevertheless, the individual sections can be used by themselves, and repetition between sections is not, therefore, altogether eliminated.

The majority of the records held at Cornwall Record Office are available to the public, however, some records have restricted access due to data protection legislation, exemptions under the Freedom of Information Act or other legislation. Please contact the Record Office for advice on particular records.

Cornwall Record Office is abbreviated as CRO.
