Hedges

Last updated: 20/08/2009 Add to My Bookmarks

In Cornwall, a hedge is generally a built structure or bank with or without a stone facing. Frequently, these are topped with woody trees, plants and shrubs and, sometimes but not always, form hedgerows. They have defined our landscape for centuries and today provide a distinct local identity quite different from other areas of the country where hedgerows are more common.

In urban areas and around our gardens more formal planted hedges or hedgerows may be found.  These provide shelter, protection, seclusion, privacy and a backdrop, for other plants and features.  However, they do require management and can sometimes cause problems for our neighbours.

In these pages we have tried to provide a range of information to enable you to celebrate, understand and manage hedges and hedgerows in all their variations.
