Cornwall has always had a rich seam of artistic talent,
craftsmanship, creativity and wholesome food and drink, which
has long been associated with quality. In 1991, the then Cornwall
County Council recognised the concerns of consumers regarding
provenance of certain Cornish foods and set up one of the first
Approved Origin Schemes in the country, within the Trading
Standards Service, known as Made in Cornwall. The
Made in Cornwall scheme ensures that there is a
marque for all things assessed as being made or produced in the
County.
All products are assessed against stringent criteria by the
Trading Standards Service to ensure that the ingredients or raw
materials are, wherever possible, sourced within the County. Each
ingredient or raw material has to undergo a significant creative
change and comply with the relevant UK and EU regulations before it
is invited to join the Scheme.
From small beginnings the scheme now has nearly 1000 members and
covers all business sectors within Cornwall with the Arts/Crafts
and Food/Drink sectors being the most prominent. Reflecting the
advances being made in technology the IT sector is becoming
increasingly well represented with graphic and web designers
amongst the membership.
Members can be found at all the biggest events within the county
calendar, including the annual Made in Cornwall Christmas
Fair held in Truro each year.
