In setting a budget for 2015/16 we also looked further ahead to set a Medium Term Financial Strategy that is the best budget for Cornwall during these austere times.

Our 2015/16 funding from Central Government was confirmed in February 2015. The reduction in funding together with service demand pressures and inflation has resulted in a requirement for savings of £58m to be made in 2015/16. Based on our assumptions for the Government’s long term funding projections for Local Government, over the five years to 2018/19 we are planning for the Council to have to make savings of some £196m in total during that period.

We carried out an extensive public consultation exercise to ensure that we listened to the views of local residents, businesses, partners and staff in order to try and deliver a balance budget and the 2015/16 budget has been set based on a 1.97% increase in council tax, which equates to 48p a week for a Band D property, and reflects the feedback that we received during the consultation exercise.
