Research service

What kind of research will we undertake?

Cornwall Record Office (CRO) offers a paid research service carried out by our staff. We will carry out any kind of research enquiry using the full range of archives, microfilm and reference books available at CRO. Commonly consulted material includes parish records, census returns and tithe awards, but any collection of records can be searched.

Work is charged at £29 per hour (inclusive of VAT to UK/EU residents) with a minimum charge of £29. For Non-EU residents, the rate is £25 per hour. Where appropriate, up to five microfiche copies or photocopies are included in this price.

1. Write to or email the Record Office with your enquiry, including as much detail as possible about the subject to be researched e.g. names, dates and parishes in the case of family history, or plans or maps in the case of house history. In order to fully benefit from this service, it is important that requests are clear and specific. We will consult our catalogues to check that we possess the relevant sources. Please do not send any money at this stage.

2. A search authorisation form will be prepared according to the information provided. This will be sent to you to check and sign. Please send the completed form back to the Record Office.

3. You will be contacted with the exact payment required once your research has been carried out. Payment can be made by cheque (payable to “Cornwall Council”) or by debit/credit card over the telephone during office hours 01872 323127 (Monday to Friday, 9.00 – 16.30hrs). Please note we are only able to accept payment in Sterling. When payment has been received the results of the research, together with any copies, will be sent in a typed report.

For more details about the records we hold, it may be useful to read about the CRO collections or search the online catalogues.
