Events in Newquay Cornwall in 2009, involving alcohol related anti-social behaviour and the tragic deaths of two young men, led to Cornwall Council calling together a multi agency partnership to work together to address concerns voiced by Newquay residents and visitors.

The Newquay Safe Partnership, has brought together over a dozen organisations including Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary, NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, the Local Safeguarding Children Board, Newquay Town Council, Tourism Newquay, Cornwall Drug and Alcohol Action Team, Newquay associations of licensed premises and off licenses, Newquay Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Newquay Town and Parish Plan Group and most importantly the local Newquay Town Residents Association.

The Group, hailed as a unique solution to a unique problem, has been working together since July 2009 on a number of projects, all focussed on and directed towards addressing the issues that surround the very popular coastal town’s night time economy.

Rob Andrew Cornwall Council Devolution Manager and Devon and Cornwall Police Superintendent Julie Whitmarsh, joint project managers for the Newquay Safe Partnership, say: “Our partnership is different from others because we work together to make things happen.

“The partnership has already been able to put into practice a number of changes to benefit Newquay but the biggest benefit to the town is the partnership itself, which has been praised by the local residents association and the Home Office as an excellent example of how authorities should be working with partners and local communities”.

“We are aiming high and want to enhance Newquay’s environment and atmosphere for everyone.

“We are already making a difference in Newquay and are confident we can turn things around. We are working to promote Newquay, and help it to evolve, as a safe and enjoyable place to visit and we will continue to support the town in its endeavours to take control of its long term future".

The Newquay Safe Partnerships is leading the way nationally by working on a number of projects in Newquay, which may be applied or used elsewhere in Cornwall and across the country.
