Our on-call firefighters are people who live or work very close to their community fire station and are on stand-by ready to respond to fire, road traffic collisions, flooding or any other emergency situations. They also help the community safety service with prevention and education.

Being a firefighter is not just about jumping on a fire engine and racing to an emergency - an important part of today's fire service is fire prevention and education. When an emergency does occur our firefighters are fully trained and equipped to deal with a range of emergencies.

Fire Control handles over 14,000 emergency calls a year. Firefighters (control) are the first point of contact for people contacting the Fire and Rescue Service in an emergency, so it is important that they have the ability to act calmly and efficiently whilst providing reassurance to the caller.
